Mike Ellis was the first captain of the Perth Wildcats when they formed in 1982 as the Westate Wildcats and captained the side from 1982 to 1992. He led the team to successive championships in 1990 and 1991, before being replaced by Andrew Vlahov. Ellis was the club's leading scorer in 1983 and 1984. After ending his playing career, he stayed with the club under many roles, including general manager, assistant coach and head coach. One of Mike’s best seasons was in 1984 when he averaged 19 points, 4 assists, 2.7 rebounds, 3.4 steals while shooting 46% from the field and 79% from the line.
